🇷🇼🇪🇺JUST IN: Dutch MEP returns from Rwanda fact-finding visit warning that Kigali is “even more repressive” than Uganda as Europe weighs migrant hub.

Dutch Member of the European Parliament Tineke Strik has given a fresh interview after a fact-finding visit to Rwanda and Uganda, sharply criticizing Rwanda’s political environment while European governments are actively considering Kigali as a location for a new migrant “return hub.” In her interview with #deKanttekening Strik described Rwanda as having an “even more repressive regime than Uganda” and called it an autocracy in which genuinely critical NGOs have little operating space.

The Rwandan Public Prosecutor’s Office is seeking a life sentence for opposition leader Victoire Ingabire, who is accused of conspiring against President Kagame from #Rwanda

UN experts have described her detention as arbitrary, and the European Parliament has denounced “serious irregularities” in the trial.

Whilst awaiting her sentencing, Ingabire is to receive an award in Spain. On 2 October, the day before her 58th birthday, the Reus Reading Centre will present her with the Josep i Liesel Vidal Memorial for Peace in recognition of her career as a non-violent political activist.

🇨🇩🇷🇼 A war economy is being institutionalised, with mineral smuggling at its core.

#Rwanda-backed M23/AFC taxes businesses, transporters and civilians, controls mining zones and strategic trade routes, and has built a parallel administration in eastern #DRC.

Meanwhile, minerals from M23-controlled areas are regularly flowing into Rwanda, where they can be mixed with local production, relabelled as Rwandan and exported onto global markets.

The vicious cycle is clear: war enables extraction. Extraction finances war. And Congolese civilians are left paying the price.
