They learned sign before they were able to get confirmation when I was 18 months old that I was Deaf. Mom already knew the alphabet since she was a kid as she used it to communicate silently in car rides with her sister. She also took a sign class in college before I was born.
Both my parents learned sign (ASL from a Deaf teacher, & SEE from the program for Deaf infants and toddlers I was in at the time). Both were fluent but rusty now. Lil sister's 1st language was ASL but she stopped signing after age 3 & never really was able to pick it up again.
Many autistic people are told that they have social anxiety, but what they really have is a rational and legitimate fear of being treated badly by others, who may neglect their needs or judge them for their differences - both of which have happened to them a million times before.
@ErinMoriartyH It's ridiculous that hearing people care so much about noise that doesn't hurt their ears. Just read an article about Albuquerqueans complaining about planes. They CHOSE to live near the airport which has been there since 1939. 🙄
TV plot: Character tries to escape killer by driving into them. Gets out to check on baby, doesn't check if killer is 100% dead - when killer inevitably gets up, character doesn't get back in car BUT does take time to grab knife out of front seat to fight on foot.🙄🤦♀️DRIVE AWAY!!
Flagging this for future discussion. This is a design problem. Don’t just designate an “access area” — integrate access into your design. They could easily add screens dedicated to ASL and CC. Or have bigger screens and include the interpreter standing next to the speaker.
i always think about things through race. CIs? how different is that for white vs POC wearers. oralism/AVT/LSL-only exposure? how different is that for white vs POC survivors? deaf gain? how different is that for white vs POC who benefit? 1/3
