@vshih2@wjhurst It’s what’s incentivized, sadly. Novel collection of valuable, less accessible data and deep theory-building were already on the decline when I was in grad school in the mid-2010s. I’m sure it’s much worse now with AI.
The horrors unfolding in northern Gaza are the result of a completely unrestrained Netanyahu gov, fully armed by the Biden admin while food aid is blocked and patients are bombed in hospitals.
This is a genocide of Palestinians. The US must stop enabling it. Arms embargo now.
My name is Isabelle Friedman, and I'm the editor in chief of the Daily Bruin, UCLA's independent student newspaper. It seems like I've only just now had a chance to sit and truly reflect on the events of the past week.
Calling in police enforcement on nonviolent demonstrations of young students on campus is an escalatory, reckless, and dangerous act.
It represents a heinous failure of leadership that puts people’s lives at risk. I condemn it in the strongest possible terms.
📢NEW PAPER!
Where @davidthewid, @sarahbmyers & I unpack what Open Source AI even is.

Scholarship on China's land reform (土地改革; 1946-52) has exploded in the past few years. A quick 🧵on the field. For too long we only had #Fanshen, one of the most influential books ever written on China. Let's start with the inside scoop about Hinton's masterpiece 🧵: 1/
A thread about my new book The Performative State @CornellPress. I’ve published the main argument earlier in a @World_Pol article called “Performative Governance” https://t.co/6X8Kz0W4fX. The book, I hope, offers much more than that. 1/9

@IsaacRabbani@dbroockman@j_kalla This was my reaction too: I think a latent variable related to openness to countervailing information may be at play here. In the future, I’d be curious to see if there’s heterogeneous treatment effects based on traits like “openness” (e.g. the Big Five personality scale).
Excited to share my new article with @miket_32 on the "Anti-bureaucratic Ghost in China's Bureaucratic Machine." We use computational grounded theory to show both persistence and transformation of CCP's anti-bureaucratism. Open access https://t.co/aZsdFIutKi
