@Ed_Realist Is it just the older kids that are doing "flips and complicated routines" at cheer class? Backflips are level 5 gymnastics, even handsprings are level 3. This seems really advanced for a class which reaches down to five year olds.
@meepbobeep@vbspurs "The Wrong Box", Robert Louis Stevenson. Also a movie.
There's a Cambodian round-robin lending system that shares the name, but has an entirely different structure.
@blightersort Harkness method dates back officially to 1930:

I do think it's not suitable for some kids, for a variety of reasons, e.g. my problem was keeping my yap shut, classes based on learning how to talk in front of people would have been wasted on me.
@blightersort Conventional also would have people with laptops in front of them, which is not a great idea if you are trying to get people to pay attention to anything.
@blightersort I send kids to a similar school. Difference between the 7th grade -- when they're just starting out, and getting them to talk about anything is pulling teeth, and ~11th, is staggering.
@blightersort They would almost certainly know a lot more about Beowulf from a class more driven by teacher lectures, but they wouldn't get the same oral practice.
@SeanTrende@katrosenfield Was the problem the AI ruleset or your appearance? When I visited the countries in Europe from which I have significant ancestry, I stuck out like a sore thumb in all of them, and I don't think it's my small fraction of non-euro that did it.
@jamb_hq Hopefully you will have one in the USA soon!
I have a lot of respect for your exams. Our sclerotic college entrance tests could do with the competition.
@grahamscheper@theo_nash AP Latin doesn't even cover half the book.
In ye olden dayes, I feel like we were required to do more for the AP Vergil track, but it still wasn't the whole thing.
@grahamscheper@theo_nash Virgil is an author listed for their 3rd/4th year Latin.
I suspect they want to teach it earlier in translation; lines up well with the Odyssey (also in 9th), is foundational. Also they want to do a lot of Latin authors; probably not enough time for the whole Aeneid.
