EXC: Andy Burnham says Westminster has failed Northern towns for decades
*Says many MPs couldn't find Makerfield on map
*Vows to unite “too factional” Labour party
*Says by-election will shape UK for years
*Warns Britain risks US style division
*Joined on doorstep by Steve Coogan
@gregalexander03 Her speech for Remain was so good/the only one I remember apart from Cameron warning bombs would rain down. It really is a shame that she was so terrible afterwards

“Fly tipping is because of the House of Lords”. People are going to realise very quickly that their fantasy of Andy Burnham doesn’t exist, and that really he’s pretty shallow
EXCL: Andy Burnham supports “early change” to the House of Lords
“I'm not going to hold back on it,” he tells me, as “I can't justify, personally, 800-plus members of the House of Lords”
“I've long believed that there's a first stage of Lords reform, which is indirect election that could be linked to a general election”
Burnham also says he still backs Labour reversing its policy on contesting elections in Northern Ireland, and that electoral reform could enable the move 👇

Wes Streeting: “I can see Andy’s strengths, I think he needs to be tested. I think his ideas need to be tested and so do mine.
I’m probably a rare thing in the Labour Party, I’m a monarchist. But this is one coronation that I’m not enthusiastic about.
I think you need a debate. I think you need a battle of ideas. He needs to set out his stall, I need to set out mine” https://t.co/bBXP5mWROe
actually kind of disappointing to see how many oomfs are going “that’s it?” i think physical violence against women is bad i’m sorry call me woke or whatever
The other problem is that Burnham may be wildly over-credited with "Manchesterism" (whatever that is), as opposed to Richard Leese, the man who actually presided over the city's revival. He's a gifted politician, but not *at all* a policy guy
Just let the party die at this point tbh. Replying to things that Blair didn’t say, and singing to a choir that hates him and will never back him in a leadership contest
Labour won’t win Britain’s future by fighting old wars or recycling old orthodoxies.
Nor will it do so through technocratic detachment from the lives people actually live.
The answers must be new, but they must also be Labour.
