thinking of the time in college when i was ticketed by NYC metro police for having my backpack on the seat next to me (in an otherwise empty subway car). was told by my professor they were really just checking if i was high/had drugs on me. still owed the fine, regardless.

That should include going after minor but easy-to-detect crimes like fare evasion in part because that lets you check people for more serious offenses like carrying illegal guns or outstanding warrants.

@BeschlossDC My grandparents were in the car, on their way to get their first Christmas tree as a married couple. Heard it over the radio. I believe he enlisted the next day. POW for months and months, thought for dead. Ended up returning and they remained married until his death in 1988.
