Just been directed to these messages from @herdyshepherd1 . Well worth reading these as they provide a comprehensive and candid assessment of rewetting on a working farm...
River rewiggling - a nerdy wet day update
If you hate this kind of thing you’ll hate this - go dredging instead
This is a little upland floodplain on a very wet day - doing what floodplains are meant to do - flood
The cold snap last week saw very different responses across floodplains where water simply accumulates compared to floodplains with flowing water. Water on the former was frozen, the later displayed amosaic of flowing wetlands and attracted plenty of bird life...
My friend RSPB Community Fundraising is fundraising for RSPB. Check out their @JustGiving page and please donate if you can. Thank you! #JustGiving https://t.co/DO0ZVKXnfy
So satisfying to see the resilience of the Howgill Beck project area after the recent works. #RSPBGeltsdale. More water held on site increasing foraging areas for waders. Dragonflies and Sand Martins hunting on the pools, Otter spraint on one of the new channels #Biodiversitywin
The #Winterwatch team are going to be highlighting the wonderful #waders of the Wash this evening.
Hope they mention the newly threatened tidal barrage!
Blog about why the Wash is so important to species such as #Curlew:

Love Curlew? Fancy spending 4 months getting to grips with Curlew behaviour and helping the Geltsdale/Curlew Life team this breeding season in the beautiful North Pennines? Volunteer position, accommodation on the reserve and car provided.

Exciting job opportunity! We are looking to fill our Moorland Warden post (20 month fixed term) at RSPB Geltsdale. Habitat management, birds surveys, species protection and plenty of time on the fell!

What a great field recording. This is such a magical sound, it makes me so happy to hear.
So it makes me very pleased to see my Curlew footage in this video.
Check out his album for lots more great field recordings!
As a thank you to everyone who’s supported the release of Simmerdim this year, here’s a new film combining one of my @curlewsounds recordings from Geltsdale, Cumbria, with RSPB curlew video footage from the same location by @NicholasRodd!

Just reflecting on the Cumbria RRS group winning the EUROPEAN RIVER PRIZE in Vienna. Little old Cumbria triumphed over projects from across a whole continent... Can't be bad!
We will be keeping this on the agenda showcasing the schemes that formed the bid through until Christmas.
WHAT A TEAM!
Massive congratulations to those in this picture and all of the others who sadly could not make it to the European River Prize award ceremony. Brilliant work by brilliant people.
JUST A LITTLE BIT OF RAIN
at RSPB Geltsdale and the previous 1m wide straight ditch is now EVERYWHERE! Super anastomosing wetland rejuvenated and massive instream habitat improvement. Can't wait for more rain to activate the left hand floodplain.
@jen_selvidge@RSPBEngland
The visual change shows a revitalised channel at Geltsdale after the restoration work but let's not forget the real win here:
The associated floodplain wetland rejuvenation. Now a mosaic of diffuse flowing subchannels, ponds variably saturated ground despite the lack of rain!
From deep straight ditch to diverse widened bifurcating channel and associated flowing wetland and all with the same amount of water! Well done to RSPB at their Geltsdale reserve.
The flowing wetland looking great this morning - #Geltsdale all this, in addition to the new sinuous channel! So much water on site considering the amount of rainfall. Excited to see how this part of the river develops over time. Roll on Spring #Waders@Dynamic_Rivers
