❌️On Thursday April 11th, the Indigenous community of Peñas Negras, Argentina was attached by the Catamarca police under orders of the prosecutor of Belen, who, together with the Governor Raúl Jalil, was protecting the interests of the mining company Elevado Gold, which does not have the free, prior and informed consent of the community to operate.
🚑 It took three days for an ambulance to arrive and take community members injured by the attack and use of rubber bullets to the hospital. Nevertheless, the police did not hesitate to arrive to attack the community and help the company enter without permission.
💬 “We are the owners. We will resist until the end. Even if they attack us we will keep resisting, because we want to conserve our natural resources,” affirmed the community.
!! The whole community of Peñas Negras is on high alert, and their lawyer has filed a complaint in the capital of Catamarca.
📣Today Peñas Negras is blocking the entrance to their community to demand that the mining company leave their community, and demand justice for those who were attacked and harmed.

HAPPENING NOW at #CERAWeek: people from Texas and Louisiana mourn the death and suffering caused by the fossil fuel industry's decades of treating communities as sacrifice zones.
Proud of my friends at @WildEarth Guardians and of my friend Hop Hopkins for starting this next chapter together! Thank you for your years of leadership, John Horning!
Big news! We are thrilled to introduce Hop Hopkins as WildEarth Guardians’ new Executive Director.
We put some questions to Hop for him to introduce himself– take a look. We’re so excited to welcome Hop to Guardians, and we think you will be too!

“Certified gas” represents the “keystone” of the gas industry’s attempts to grow in a climate-constrained world. They need the social license, and I think that’s what’s driving a lot of this,” Josh Eisenfeld, Corporate Accountability Campaign Manager, Earthworks. “But there’s absolutely zero certainty that this is a climate benefit." 3rd party auditing and accreditation schemes are gaining traction as a due diligence tool used by automakers, regulators, and government officials. But are all schemes built the same? Short answer: absolutely not. 🧵 https://t.co/eml9PKvqK9
We do not have to choose between electrifying transportation and protecting mining-affected communities and the environment. We have an opportunity to do both. #MiningReform

The global mining industry is currently engaged in one of the boldest greenwashing efforts we’ve ever seen. A 🧵.
They want to create a new certification for ethical mining, to replace existing 3rd-party schemes with audits & external accountability. 1/8

At #COP28UAE, we’ve already seen how extractive industries seek to co-opt the clean energy transition for their own gain.
Let’s not replace one form of harmful extraction with another.
A clean energy future cannot be built on dirty mining.
