Awarding indigenous artists in the mainstream could pave the way for more indigenous art getting funded, more indigenous stories being told, which could have real world impacts on things like hate crimes, hiring inequity, and on and on and on.

The tragic reality is that Lily Gladstone becomes a stand-in for all indigenous people, all nonbinary people, all women of color. A loss for Emma will never be a loss for cis white women as a whole. But Lily’s loss gives Hollywood the excuse to say “See? These stories won’t sell”

Emma’s performance was brilliant and the Oscars are meaningless when it comes to quality of art. But if we have given this much power to something so flawed, I wish we would at least use that power for good.
