Thank you to Lord Austin of Dudley @LordIanAustin who took a group of our children from Birmingham Children's Hospital round Parliament and the House of Lords today. The historical stories were incredible - everyone (children and adults) was fascinated. Thank you so much
Born on 28 June 1918, Horst Bickel, a pioneering German physician, played a central role in developing the first effective dietary treatment for PKU in the early 1950s, alongside Evelyn Hickmans and John Gerrard at Birmingham Children’s Hospital
Together the contributions of Horst Bickel and Robert Guthrie were two visionary pioneers who started early diagnosis and early treatment of PKU. Their shared birthday, 28 June, is now celebrated as International PKU Day, honouring their legacy.
