"I don't pick sides" is a fallacy when there's a massive power imbalance and a clear aggressor. If your husband is abusing your child and you do nothing, you're not neutral in that scenario, and when your kid grows up you'll probably be blamed as much as the father.

A modern military force hammering a giant concentration camp full of colonized people using high-tech weapons of mass murder with the help of your tax dollars is not a "war" that you get to be "neutral" towards. It's a genocide, and you're either for it or against it. There is no comfortable third option where you get to avoid picking a side and also avoid looking like an asshole.

BREAKING: Ed Sheeran's "LOOP” US tour has lost its three remaining opening acts – FINNEAS, Lukas Graham, and Aaron Rowe – after they withdrew Tuesday in the wake of Macklemore being removed from the lineup over his pro-Palestine remarks.

Sheeran's own backing band, Beoga, has also announced it is leaving the tour.

On social media, FINNEAS wrote, “Artists must not be silenced when they speak up for the oppressed … I stand with Palestine and its people.”

Aaron Rowe noted in his statement, “I cannot stand by and allow billionaires to use their position of power to silence the rightful voices of those who speak up against Israeli genocide and who highlight the savage murder of children.”

Beoga wrote, “We are Irish people who understand colonialism. As founding members of the Irish Artists for Palestine Movement, we are committed activists for justice and will continue to be.”

Lukas Graham stated, “It’s hard to watch families in other parts of the world burying the people they love … Money doesn’t give you the right to own the conversation.”

Israeli legal exceptionalism produces remarkable contradictions in Canadian foreign policy. Canada fulfills its international legal obligations when it is politically advantageous to do so. But when the Israeli military is at the centre of the issue, Canada refuses to uphold the rule of law.

Article 6(3) of the Arms Trade Treaty requires Canada to not authorize conventional arms transfers to a receiving party if at the time of the authorization Canada is aware that "the arms or items would be used in the commission of genocide, crimes against humanity, grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions of 1949, attacks directed against civilian objects or civilians protected as such, or other war crimes as defined by international agreements to which it is a Party."

Canada imposes a comprehensive sanctions regime on Russia, with a two-way arms embargo covering every sector of the arms trade being one of its central features. This prohibits persons in Canada and Canadians abroad from exporting arms and related material to Russia. It also prohibits the provision of any services to Russia which would bolster Russia’s military capacity.

Yet despite the Gaza genocide, countless atrocities perpetrated by the Israeli armed forces, and the ICC investigation into Israel's international crimes, no such sanctions are applied to Israeli arms manufacturers or other individuals or entities involved in the arms trade. In fact, Canadian companies continue to supply parts to Elbit Systems - Israel's largest arms manufacturer.
