Don't underestimate your contribution to ward culture & 'atmosphere'.
Call bad days for what they are (odds are everyone else is feeling it too); laugh with your nurses at the bizarre; randomly bring the ward morning tea -& be generous & specific with your thanks #tipsforinterns https://t.co/zozoFoPKAd
And there is a 25% gender pay gap, because women do longer consults. If I see an adolescent sleeping in their car, & bulk bill them its $50 take home per hour. With >$10000 a year insurance, compulsory education etc & no leave or super. Here's the practice income
@GPswampwarrior’s thread goes straight to key aspects of GP work in Australia that puts juniors off the profession & pushes many of us to burn out & going part time - or leaving.
I've been asked how I'd fix primary care. Here's my top four easy fixes for GPs that don't cost a lot(well less than teaching everyone else how to do my job)
1.Registrars who choose GP shouldn't have to pay cuts. They get a pay rise in every other specialty. At least make it even
Sobering.
Excellent representation of what we will be facing in the next number of long months to years
Its the fast and slow of medicine - acute panic and flurry, with the chronic burden of psychosocial spiritual distress
The book 'Heartline' by colleague & study teller extraordinare Brendan Carson is a favourite of mine. A good gift for family that explains the colourful, chaotic & yet poignant humanity in my job as a doctor. Ooh, @Eleytherius' 'Dustfall' is a must read too! #doctorswhowrite
I loved getting ideas from other colleagues at this workshop. (Chucking a list of your workplace's challenges & possible strategies into the air is also very cathartic 😁) Key learning points:
Don't do it solo
Start small
Be ok w/ straying from your plan

Prof Geoff Riley exploring burnout and some solutions. He explains work of Prof Onora O'Neill - myth of "lack of trust" leading to overregulation which doesn't make a difference unless people are involved in the change #drshealthperth19
During a recent crit care term, I learnt that how you start an #advancedcareplanning convo is perhaps the most important part. I’ve found myself using my own variation on q2 already - but I really like q1! “How would you like to be remembered on your last day?” https://t.co/I5woW3fYRD
Our days on earth are numbered, live your life fully, without regret, with meaning, connection, compassion and kindness to others.

@HumanFact0rz@petrosoniak Thanks for the advice - applicable to a good number of #MedEd & research endeavours I suspect.
Could you elaborate on hazard assessment? Sustainability as alluded to by @IanMeducator would be one consideration. Psychological safety another.
My journal club review of a paper abt. human factors by @petrosoniak & @HumanFact0rz & the subsequent discussion led me to a cupboard of unused mannequins.
Any tips as I start planning some basic SIMS for our interns to foster team leadership & stress tolerance skills? #FOAMed
Hmm very true. Little point in investing time & energy into something if you're not also thinking about the long game. I think this is one of the reasons our ED dept's JMO education program has gotten more traction than the ward based one. Food for thought. https://t.co/pjIogNNr5D
@HumanFact0rz@petrosoniak@jessv_b And plan to make it sustainable. That cupboard of very expensive mannequins is actually the cheapest part of sim: time and staffing that is volunteer based will soon have the cupboard full again.
Absolutely Clare! I'm learning the importance of keeping your SIMS' goals in mind when planning & debriefing - and above even that, facilitating a environment where participants feel safe to get out if it what is relevant to them #MedEd https://t.co/nxVtcb4lfZ
@IanMeducator@HumanFact0rz@petrosoniak@jessv_b Keep it simple, if you can’t find a reason something is in the sim, does it really need to be there? (The answer to that is sometimes) Be respectful in the learning conversation - everyone learns something, even the bosses (sometimes especially the bosses)
Hanging out in anaesthetics when HDU is quiet in my critical care term. Utterly fascinating watching pharmacology in action. You can't help but be concious of the privilege it is to be in this job with each induction. #gorural
