@meli_cssw You belong here! Your positionality (including your struggles) is your intuitive power. Or in the words of Audre Lorde, it is your erotic- the internal source of wisdom that allows you to know. HUGS
A reminder to all my current and future mental health professionals, your mental health struggles do not make you less of an asset to the field. Marsha Linehan founded DBT informed by her own struggles with suicide and mental illness. #csswmmt22@mmt98@Active_Minds
Thank you @nfontenot2510! Attending college is an assumed marker of "being fine," and this is not the case. How can we create structural changes to support college mental health? (equitable access to counseling is one) #CSSWMTT22@mmt98
The college mental health crisis is silent yet common. Authors suggest ways to “normalize not stigmatize” including peer counseling, assigning mental health modules during orientation & educational campaigns.@mmt98#CSSWMMT22 https://t.co/OqGE99cHWk
For anyone supporting LGBTQ youth, @TrevorProject is an incredible resource for suicide prevention/intervention and offers a vast range of educational materials around gender, sexuality, race, and mental health. #CSSWMMT22@mmt98@NoStigmas

The media is a major perpetrator of mental health stigma. Check out how @ThisIsMyBrave is using media and performance to build a counter-narrative #CSSWMTT22@mmt98

"We need to hold the media accountable for the material they produce&we need to speak up when on-screen portrayals of mental illness are disrespectful or rob people of their dignity."

@meli_cssw@mmt98 "Just get over it"
"stop thinking about it"
"you just need to smoke"
"there are kids in Mexico who are starving"
"I wish I was in grad school"
"you're just confused. try acting like a girl"
"scandalosa"
(omg I have way too many)
@JamesFr15313138 I think it's ridiculous that many campuses don't offer inclusive mental health services. My undergrad, UC Berkeley, offered services to all students regardless of insurance. And many of the services were free.
I personally believe that academic twitter is very toxic & negative for incoming PhD students. Let us enjoy this excitement, we are nervous enough as is. Telling us how difficult it is is not helping & surely is not great advice.

It takes a tumultuous amount of strength to speak one's truth. Survivors deserve to be HEARD with compassion. Never dismiss someone's experience as "not that bad." AND remember violence is a spectrum.

Borderline Personality Disorder is an extremely stigmatized disorder. Even clinicians hold negative views and refuse clients despite the high risk for suicide amongst folx with the disorder. How can we break the stigma?
