@Noumenon72@internpierre US higher ed cost is inflated & wasteful. I spent college years in France and US. French tuition was about 1/5 that in US. French cafeteria had mediocre food and plastic chairs. US college had very nice food and solid oak chairs. Way happier in France though. Nice chairs = waste
@adam_tooze A ratio of two *indices* can meaningfully show change over time but does not actually say which is more or less expensive per meal at a point in time.
@ClickingSeason Detention # >> Deportation #. ICE can be doing massive sweeps detaining people (overreach catching many non IA's, triggering community resistance) but only actually deporting a subset who disproportionately are justice involved (action looking more legit if still error prone).
@Heminator With the President directly telling the brass that he wants to use US cities for military training, and SecDef purging top ranks, there's a higher chance of illegal orders coming from the WH and being obeyed. Kelly's reminder was relevant and timely.
@EdKrassen Lots of replies saying these high-crime cities all have Dem mayors. I haven’t seen anyone articulate why that - the national party affiliation of the mayor - would be a relevant point. Please explain.
@signulll It’s a grind and for the vast majority of startup folks it has yielded very mediocre economic outcomes, in a super high cost area. Don’t let the successes fool you. Survivor bias is real. Working at big tech companies has been much lower beta.
@PromptLLM The models all adapt to your style. Here’s a nugget included in ChatGPT’s reply to my using the ide tidal prompt: Know this: You don’t need permission. Not from parents, society, bosses, lovers, or your former self. You are allowed to reinvent everything.
@BillAckman@grok Provide examples of governments providing services (especially services that resemble businesses - including health insurance, and liquor retailing) either cheaper or better than the private sector.
@catturd2 Emancipation was a great moral victory and it's absolutely worthy of a federal holiday. It may also be true that lots of Americans hadn't heard of Juneteenth, but so what?
@visegrad24 Watch closer, the video seems to show the target of the beating is not the firefighter but the guy in the white t-shirt who is clinging to him for protection. The firefighters actually get some respect by the end. I mean, it’s all bad, but the OP misses key details here.
@snat_chap@amandaknox Good question. Start by *requesting* that the Salvadorans release him to US custody. There's also a contract in place with them to jail people on behalf of the US govt - may contain a relevant clause. Finally, there's regular political leverage, which DJT is proud of.
@ArtCandee It appears that total US auto sales in 2024 were $4.8 billion (source: custommarketinsights dot com). How is there a $50 automotive deficit with Japan alone?
@JakeyBoy61@tanvi_ratna They generally refinance each instrument (bill, note etc) at its maturity date, because the bond market knows exactly when every part is coming due, and expects the refinancing to happen on schedule. This predictability helps keep prices (rates) stable.
