Asylum applicants get work authorization just 5 months after filing—not after approval. Then Social Security numbers are mailed out. No in-person interview. No rigorous identity proof in many cases.
New non-citizen SSNs issued (per DOGE/SSA data shown publicly):
• FY2021: 270,425
• FY2022: 590,193
• FY2023: 964,163
• FY2024: 2,095,247
That’s the surge. Parole + asylum claims under the prior administration created a pipeline: claim asylum → wait a few months → EAD → SSN → ability to work, get benefits, and in some cases driver’s licenses. DOGE also flagged ~1.3 million non-citizens on Medicaid and evidence of voter registration (and some voting) in limited state data.
The video is right: the asylum work-auth rule was the tip of the iceberg. The real story is a system that rewarded the claim itself, years before any final decision.
Musk/DOGE are not “destroying Social Security.” They’re surfacing who got numbers and benefits under rules that were deliberately expanded. The data is public now. The policy choice that produced the spike was not.
