At the BMC (@mybmc) Standing Committee meeting, I raised an irregularity.

A Rs. 62 crore tender for the installation of LED lights beneath city skywalks was awarded to a firm blacklisted by the Thane Municipal Corporation. The very same lights available for Rs. 700 on the Government e-Marketplace were procured by the BMC at Rs. 9,600 per unit. How does a blacklisted firm get awarded such a high ticket contract? Who approved this? And why were Mumbai’s taxpayers made to pay nearly 14 times the market price?

This is a massive betrayal of public trust. Every rupee wasted is a rupee taken from the people of Mumbai, from their roads, their hospitals, their children’s schools.

I have demanded a white paper on this tender and a full probe into all work carried out by the Mechanical and Electrical Department over the last four years. The Chairperson of the Standing Committee, Shri Prabhakar Shinde (@prabhakarsbjp) Ji has directed an inquiry report within 15 days. I will be tracking every step of this inquiry and ensure that those responsible are held accountable. Our citizens deserve a civic body that is responsible and accountable.

Supreme Court is finally hearing petitions challenging the law on appointment of election commissioners. The matter has been pending in the SC since January 2024. In the meantime, current CEC, Gyanesh Kumar, and 2 Election Commmioners were appointed.

After the Constitution bench judgment in the Anoop Baranwal case in 2023, the BJP govt had brought the law to replace the CJI with a cabinet minister on the selection panel for appointing Election Commissioners. With a 2:1 majority, the law empowers the ruling party to select candidates of its choice as Chief & commissioners of the ECI. Hope the SC upholds the letter and spirit of its landmark 2023 judgment.
