Every semiconductor chip on Earth is fundamentally limited by its materials: the specific alloys, dielectrics, and compounds that determine how fast, cool, and efficient a chip can be.
AI chips specifically are now generating heat exceeding 140 watts per square centimetre, and discovering a genuinely new, better material to handle that has traditionally taken years of trial & error lab work, one of the slowest, most expensive bottlenecks in the entire semiconductor industry.
And to solve exactly this problem, an unknown startup, Discovered Materials, decided to skip the decade of lab work entirely.
Founded by Advaith Sridhar and Akash Ramdas, 2 IIT Madras alumni who met as students over a decade ago and only reunited on this exact problem years later.
Ramdas with a Stanford PhD in materials science whose nanoscale interconnect work is already sitting inside Intel and TSMC's own roadmaps, Sridhar an AI engineer from Carnegie Mellon who built autonomous agents at Persona AI.
Together, they built a swarm of AI agents designed to discover and accelerate adoption of new semiconductor materials, compressing what usually takes 10+ years of lab work down toward months.
They have already released 100s of new AI-discovered materials and launched the Material Discovery Bench, the first open benchmark for testing how well AI models perform at real-world semiconductor materials discovery.
Co-founder Ramdas has said plainly: in just 3 months, they have made new thermal materials matching the performance of products the world's largest chemical companies took years to develop.
They have closed $9M seed, led by Lightspeed India Partners, with Y Combinator and Peak XV Partners participating and angel investors including Paul Graham, co-founder of Y Combinator itself, personally backing this one.
Why this matters for Bharat, 5-10 year lens:
- Every conversation in this thread about India's chip ambitions, fabs, ATMP, gases, assumes the materials going into those chips already exist.
- Discovered Materials sits one layer further upstream: using AI to find materials that do not exist yet.
- If this becomes a tool the likes of Intel, TSMC, and Nvidia actually rely on, Bharat is not just catching up on chip manufacturing, it is shaping the fundamental research layer the whole global industry draws from.
2 IIT Madras grads, building AI agents that hunt for materials nobody has discovered yet, funded by the man who literally invented the modern startup accelerator, and almost nobody outside a niche deeptech newsletter has ever heard the name Discovered Materials.
