🕯️ It is with profound grief that we at CMC Vellore mourn the passing of Prof. K.V. Johny — the Father of Kidney Transplantation in India. 🕯️
A giant has left us.
His legacy is eternal.
🧵 A tribute to a legend: 🙏🏻
In the late 1960s, Prof. Kaivilayil V Johny trained in renal transplantation at Adelaide, Australia. He returned with a mission, and changed Indian Nephrology forever.
On 2nd February 1971, Prof. KV Johny & Prof. Mohan Rao performed India's FIRST successful kidney transplant at CMC Vellore — a defining moment in the history of Indian medicine.
He founded the Department of Nephrology at CMC Vellore in 1971 - the first of its kind, and launched India's first DM Nephrology training programme, seeding a generation of kidney specialists across the nation.
Under his leadership, CMC Vellore became the gold standard for nephrology & renal transplantation in India.
He was not just a clinician — he was a builder, a teacher, and a visionary who trained nephrologists who now lead kidney care across India and the world.
"A visionary who opened the doors of kidney transplantation in India and transformed the future of renal care."
Rest in peace, Prof. Johny. CMC Vellore and Indian Nephrology will forever stand on the shoulders of your life's work. 🙏

In the CONFIDENCE trial in persons with chronic kidney disease and type 2 diabetes, combination therapy with finerenone and empagliflozin led to a greater reduction in the urinary albumin-to-creatinine ratio than either drug alone. Full trial results: https://t.co/4Gf0LboOCp

Study by CMC in collab with @LSHTM shows high numbers of scrub typhus in the rural communities - potentially life-threatening disease spread by infected larval mites. Study of 32,000 people in rural areas of Tamil Nadu, shows scrub typhus to be a leading cause of hospitalisations for #fever.
If left untreated, severe illness from infection can lead to Acute Respiratory Distress Syndrome (ARDS), shock, meningitis & kidney failure; treated using #antibiotics but currently, no preventive vaccine.
Significant study highlights need to spread awareness & improve diagnostics for timely treatment of affected.

Finally. We figured out the dense deposits in dense deposit disease (DDD).
The answer is Apolipoprotein E.
You can stain for APOE & make the diagnosis of DDD in >80% cases. Without electron 🔬.
DDD was the reason I got into mass spectrometry 17 yrs ago. https://t.co/fQxitNbFYF
💥In my practise, I see pts with post-transplant erythrocytosis - hope to use this drug at some point in time in the future!
💥Rusfertide, an injectable peptide mimetic of the master iron regulatory hormone hepcidin, restricts the availability of iron for erythropoiesis.
💥In patients with polycythemia vera, rusfertide treatment was associated with a mean hematocrit of less than 45% during the 28-week dose-finding period, and the percentage of patients with a response during the 12-week randomized withdrawal period was greater with rusfertide than with placebo
