The political right and political left are under the sway of what @WaltBrueggemann calls the totalism of empire.
They both want you to buy fully into their vision of our common life together but as followers of Jesus we opt out of their totalism in favor of the kingdom of God.
My political position.
I’m an exile living in Babylon. Babylonian politics are interesting and sometimes quite entertaining. But they aren’t redemptive and they didn’t—and never will—die for me.
My allegiance will always be toward the one who will bring me home.
When I was a child scared of the dark, his words reminded me that Aslan is on the move. When I was a teenager in a spiritual crisis, he pointed me away from cultural Christianity and surprised me with joy. On the anniversary of his death, I am grateful.
I can’t tell you how many people I’ve talked to that came to faith in Jesus once they realized that they didn’t have to believe in a young earth—something they saw as on par with a flat earth—to be a genuine, Bible loving, Jesus following, Christian.
The loudest voices defending a serial liar caught in his web of lies are Christians. Just let that sink in. Those who claim the name of the Way, Truth, and Life are actively defending the embodiment of corruption, lies, and greed. Jesus weeps.
Christian, if your values align comfortably with your political party then you’ve likely surrendered something fundamental to the faith.
Each party has taken positions that conflict with Christian compassion or conviction.
