Cape Verde is one of the best counterarguments in sports history to the misguided concept that only championships matter.
The presumption that there are no meaningful accomplishments in sport short of winning everything is an overly simplistic, toxic mentality that has to die.
For those wondering that’s the first time a red card in the World Cup has been overturned since 1962. It was when Garrincha was sent off in the semis, and a series of bribes got his card overturned
This is why Folarin Balogun got a straight red card and one-game ban. He almost broke Tarik Muharemovic's ankle.
The people who are saying this isn’t a red or calling it injustice are ridiculous.
The “sportsmanlike” thing to do btw, since you all seem to care about that so much after Paraguay - France, is for Balogun to refuse to play, own his red card and not accept undue advantages from the US President
It was terrible when Ronaldo’s red card was suspended so he could play in the tournament and it’s bad now. What’s the point of giving red cards then when FIFA can be pressured to wipe them away when it benefits them?
It was a red card foul. Just because another referee didn’t give it against someone else doesn’t change that. No one else has been able to appeal or change their red cards because FIFA doesn’t allow it. And again they’re not overturning the card, they’re simply suspending it.
