Very happy to share the second paper of my PhD thesis 🎊😊 We study the effect of mutation rate (mu) and population size (N) on genome size reduction 🧬
In short, we show that an increase in either N or mu reduces genomes, but in different ways (1/3)
https://t.co/KQRWTvZ9YC
- an increase in mu reduces both the coding and non-coding sizes
- an increase in N reduces solely the non-coding size
Most surprisingy (and interestingly), the coding *fraction* is determined by the *product N x mu* !
We still have lots to understand here!

A study reveals that viral evolution can undergo rapid bursts without external factors, with duplication events- and not just mutations-playing crucial roles in facilitating these innovations. #VirusEvolution#PunctuatedEvolution#Genomics

I'm looking forward to meeting some amazing people at the conference 😊
I'm delighted to present part of my PhD work this Saturday at #Evolution2024 in Montreal :D
Want to know more about the key role of chromosomal rearrangements in genome evolution ? Come at 4.30pm in room 518B ! It's part of the great session on Evolutionary theory.
I want to thank #ISMB2024 and #EvolCompGen for the opportunity to present my work this morning about genome streamlining 😊
If you want to know more, we have a preprint available ! https://t.co/10GwT2zLqH
Merci pour cette super conférence !!
Je vais très vite aller lire le livre d'Isabelle Collet pour en apprendre plus et je le conseille à tout le monde ! =)

@bramvandijk88 Our interpretation is that as you increase the mutational pressure , and since most possible duplications would be highly deleterious, genomes evolve to protect themselves. Here, as the mutation rates are per base, genomes shrink to reduce the number of occurring duplications
Testing the consequences of mitochondrial endosymbiosis in a theoretical approach, authors find that genome expansion and asymmetry in genome size stem from host-symbiont cell-cycle coordination.
