I had the pleasure of sitting down with @JLWChambers on the Search with Candour podcast (out now).
I went into the interview with no notes and told Jack to just ask me anything. Believe it was one of the best interviews that I have ever done as we were just able to pontificate about search engines, AI search, ads, and the future of the marketing that we currently do.
Since recording in March, a few things that we guessed have already come to fruition:
- Keywordless Matching
https://t.co/PprRvlr2SO
- Ads in ChatGPT even though Altman said no at the time
https://t.co/RMbceTOTC4
I also talked about the attitude that I think it takes to be successful in this business and all of the revenge shows/books that I have been consuming.
Big thanks to Jack for guiding what I think was a fantastic (and helpful) conversation!

On the Search with Candour podcast, @gregfinn shared a brilliant ad tactic with @JLWChambers:
* Scrape the SERPs
* See who’s running AdSense
* Place ads on their pages

From 3 years of interviewing SEOs on Search With Candour, there is definitely a trend of "accidental SEOs" 😂
I accidentally fell into SEO because a colleague & I were the only ones who knew how websites work.
We worked with a local designer and built the site on WordPress.
One of the main differences between the younger generation and the older generation of SEOs is that we, the olds, became SEOs by accident as the web evolved...

SEO updates you ✨NEED✨ to know [4 Nov]:
✨ OpenAI launches in ChatGPT Search. This feature is available now for Plus/Team users and delivers real-time search results using Bing's index. The ChromeGPT extension also launched alongside this update.
🧑🏫 Google now offers Grounding with Google Search and Gemini API. Grounding aims to reduce hallucinations and provide more up-to-date information. Compare Mode also lets users compare results with and without grounding.
🤖 The OpenAI user agent is called OAI-SearchBot. Users can currently allow or disallow the three OpenAI crawlers; OAI-SearchBot, ChatGPT-User and GPTBot, independently using their robots.txt. via @iPullRank
🪦 Google's Creator Conversation event was "a funeral". The first event of its kind, the Creator Conversation seemingly provided vague answers and no reassurance for the invited publishers.
📧 New AI features in Apple's Mail app are summarising emails. This may be particularly important for digital PR as it will affect open rates. Users can receive summaries of their emails in the inbox without opening the emails. via @jomarieoreilly
📞 Google's Q3 2024 earnings call provided glimpses at the future of Search. Project Astra (mentioned last week) may launch in 2025. Google claims "strong engagement with AI Overviews" for both organic and ads. via @marie_haynes
🗺️ AI Overviews are expanding to more than 100 countries. This expansion proves Google's commitment to AIO, despite mixed feedback from users and the SEO community.
📍 Google adds Gemini to Google Maps in the US. Gemini will be able to provide "inspirational collections" in Maps, summarise user reviews, and allow users to ask questions about locations and businesses. via @glenngabe
🕷️ Google updates its crawl budget documentation for large sites. This update includes recommendations for improving the crawlability of large sites that use separate HTML for mobile and desktop.
📉 The Core Web Vitals documentation has been updated. New details about Interaction to Next Paint (INP) scores including threshold scores and how different devices can load the same site at different speeds.
🤑 Russia fines Google $20 decillion. Yes, that's a real number. It's 20 followed by 60 zeroes. This is Russia's response to Google allegedly blocking pro-Kremlin channels and content on YouTube. Lol.
💌 If you like these kinds of updates, we curate and send them out weekly to over 6,000 SEOs, along with SEO tips and a deep-dive podcast with @jlwchambers

@jonoalderson@brightonseo There were quite a few "link marketplace" kind of exhibitors at BrightonSEO this time.
There were sp,e spicy discussions between their reps and the digital PR people on the main floor and even on some of the panels too.
