The reason Sinestro pivots to asking about John Stewart isn't because John is directly tied to the Manhunters, but because what John can do violates the rules of how Green Lantern energy works. 

When Hal travels to the Oa prison to ask his former mentor about the Manhunters, Sinestro brushes off the threat, calling a surviving Manhunter only Hal's "second greatest threat" and immediately shifts the focus to John. 

Sinestro redirects Hal’s focus to John Stewart because Hal is hunting a localized threat while overlooking a cosmic anomaly. While a rogue, shapeshifting Manhunter running loose in Rushville is dangerous, John represents a far bigger mystery: he created a fully autonomous green bird construct that persisted long after his ring was drained, removed, and separated from him by miles.

Standard willpower constructs instantly dissolve without continuous ring focus and power, proving John is somehow generating or anchoring energy independently of the Guardians' technology making a rookie who can bypass the fundamental laws of Green Lantern power a far more profound disruptor than a surviving ancient android.
