24 June is the feast of the Birth of John the Baptist. It's Midsummer Day, the old date of the solstice: as medieval writers explain it, Christ's birth is celebrated at midwinter, when light begins to grow, and John's at midsummer, when it begins to wane. https://t.co/mAkGOhSnFd

Been abroad at the G7 covering momentous world events - of which there are a few - to return to the UK to find the new mediocrity running the BBC is scrapping the BBC Radio's The World Tonight. Is there no end to Britain's desire to insulate itself from the world ?
Every stage of the Grands Départs, live and free 💛
A new partnership with @tntsports will see @Channel5Sport broadcast the British Grands Départs in 2027 📺
The deal also includes daily highlights of both races until 2028.
Very sad to learn that Radio 4's The World Tonight is to be killed off in the latest round of BBC cuts. It has a long and honourable history as one of the more thoughtful BBC news programmes and I am proud to have been associated with it for more than twenty years.
This Insight considers two challenging economic issues influencing the Scottish outlook: 1) the increase in people not working due to ill-health and 2) weak productivity. Both these factors impact on living standards and public finances. Read it here: https://t.co/XdrBmOCZOc
This is possibly slightly unfair. Though, of course, it's sad that it's no longer a seminary, the charity that looks after Ushaw have done a really good job with limited resources and deserve credit for that. I enjoyed my visit enormously.
Sad to see Ushaw College in such a state. This former Roman Catholic seminary, with roots dating back to the 16th century, was once a place of immense heritage and learning. While parts have been beautifully restored, others remain abandoned and dilapidated.

Tonight's full moon - some call it the Snow Moon - was almost the exact same size as the Balmoral Hotel clock from where I was standing.
There really is no better place to be than Edinburgh to experience a full moon brightening the sky & enhancing the cityscape.
