You can have all the prestige and authority you can dream of, but if you're not willing to scrub the toilets when necessary, everyone can tell, and no one thinks of you as their leader
Overheard at the farmer's market this morning: "Mom, they have something called 'strawberry rhubarb!'"
There are bells, calls to prayer, everywhere, for those with ears to hear.
“When you can buy your way out of any mistake, when you can fire anyone who disagrees with you, when your social circle consists entirely of people who need something from you, the basic mechanism by which humans learn that other people are real goes dark” https://t.co/UkZwbuqVqp
I dislike the modern self-help line of "just be more courageous and do the hard thing!"
not because it's totally false - yes, sometimes it's just a matter of taking the scary leap
but how scary something feels is not a fixed property. we have an ability to shift how intimidating a certain decision seems, via our internal relationship to that decision + to ourselves
many of our modern decisions are abstract: leaving a cushy corporate job can be terrifying, but the actual risk to our life & health is quite removed
since the fear is abstract, we have much more room to change our relationship to it. in other words, it'd be very hard for me to convince you that an angry crocodile isn't a threat, but leaping into a new career doesn't have to feel life-or-death
so we change the question:
instead of "how can I force myself to do the terrifying thing?"
we can ask "how can I create the conditions where this decision feels tolerable (and even easy)?"
I've done that for myself & I've helped other people get to the same place. it saves so much time & effort that can then be applied to actually doing good work, instead of fighting unnecessary battles with yourself
This is 100% by design and why E**n purchased it. He doesn't like journalism or reporting; doesn't like what they say about him. He bought it to ruin what it was good at.
Flabbergasted at how absolutely useless this place in terms of getting breaking news. Twitter used to be incredibly helpful during the War in Ukraine, Afghanistan and other global events. Now it's AI Slop and non-chronological tweets.
it’s on slack bro. it’s in the drive. i just put it in the notion bro i literally sent it to you on teams. did you check the airtable bro? it’s in the box bro. it’s single sign on, it’s on okta bro. no you need the yubikey. check your deel bro, it’s on gusto. check outlook bro
thinking, for no particular reason, about the unfilmed ending of the original novel, in which the power to alter reality just by wishing gradually robs Bastian of his humanity and all his memories and renders his existence meaningless
The danger of today's social media apps have pushed past any powers of self-control. It's like ordering a turkey club at a restaurant, but the cooks keep shoving a Snickers in your sandwich. Maybe before you could pick it out; now they're forcing nougat in every bite.
Wait, they've made the woman who hatched from an egg alongside her other three quadruplet siblings after the storm god seduced their mum in the form of a swan BLACK?? Whatever happened to historical accuracy!
Repair is not, contrary to what many think, about the allocation of blame. It is about the capacity for a return to intimacy. When we have hurt someone, we have changed them. To refuse to see the part of them that has been changed by us is to no longer know them.
It's just the ability to deal with difficult people and situations with limited/no escape when physical violence is pretty much off the table. Not to say straight men can't do it, but let's be real.
What is it about the flight attendant lifestyle that makes it only possible to girls and gays? Straight men can be pilots, so it's not the distance. Straight men can be waiters, so it's not the humility. It's something about the combination of the two
A speech I give to every new employee, either immediately before or immediately after we hire them:
1. Our business, and therefore your job, exists bc rich people trust us with their money and/or their buildings
2. They are adults and will understand if we make mistakes (provided they are not repeated too often)
3. What they will certainly not forgive is being lied to, either directly or by omission
4. Furthermore, we can fix ~any mistake *so long as we know about it*
5. Therefore, if you make a mistake or see any of us making a mistake, we beg you to tell us, so we can tell them and then fix it
6. Don't worry about being yelled at. We don't do that here, and, anyway, there is no conceivable way any mistake you could make in this job would hold a candle to the mistakes (generally, of omission) I have personally made (and, probably, unfortunately, continue to make)
7. My literal door is usually open; my metaphorical door is always open. If you see something wrong, pls, again, I beg you, come tell me!
(And then I repeat some or all of this during company meetings throughout the year, to try to make sure it sinks into the culture.)
