According to Article 7(1)(c) of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court, enforced disappearance of persons, when carried out as part of a widespread or systematic attack directed against a civilian population, is a crime against humanity. The taking of hostages constitutes a war crime according to Article 8(2)(c)(iii) of the Rome Statute, applicable in any armed conflict.
