This article is compelling but it also provokes a comment. I don't think ANY of us fully understood the raw and awesome power of the industrial machinery at work here to back the status quo and make dramatic reform impossible. That's what the entire system is designed to do.

We also have to remember that traditionally these positions have been sinecures. Agency heads were not supposed to do anything. They were there to absorb praise and preen and otherwise promote the president, then leave for high paid consulting gigs. That's it. Nothing more.

RFK and his people are different. Not in my lifetime has an appointee actually tried to upend the system he heads. His limited successes so far might be more than was ever expected.

Adams, Lincoln, and Wilson jailed journalists. Lincoln closed hundreds of newspapers.

Obama unleashed the FBI against the AP, the New York Times, and Fox’s James Rosen. And more.
