I am living proof that, if you set your goal low enough and are fortunate enough that there is not someone better than you in your chosen field (or the person who is better than you moves jobs), you can achieve anything you put your mind to.
@ChartUpdate It’s not a normal number 1 but didn’t Three Lions also have three runs at the top, even without counting Three Lions 98 (two in 1996 and one in 2018)
@jburnmurdoch@ProfTimBale@adamkempner1906 @PhilHerts But Southgate did have some control. Because England won the first two matches in 2018, he could afford to game the third match (albeit England might have lost anyway). If England had beaten Nigeria in 2002, they wouldn’t have played Brazil until the SF (and later in the day)
@sundersays As a quarter of the last 16, in Belgium, Argentina, Italy and Portugal, they also account for a quarter of the semi-finalists, 3 of the 8 finalists and a quarter of the winners, which bodes well for one of France, Germany or Portugal
@robfordmancs@carlgardner Taking an even longer view, it is only the second time in more than a hundred years that the incumbent party has lost the White House after only one term
On the flip side, if Donald Trump wins on Tuesday, it will be the first time the US will have had four consecutive two-term Presidents, with Clinton-Bush-Obama matching Jefferson-Madison-Monroe
If Joe Biden wins Tuesday’s election, he will be the first Democrat VP to win a Presidential election without first succeeding to the top job since Martin Van Buren in 1836 and only the second man to do so
Tonight @usopen we will see the first man born in the 1990s to be a grand slam singles champion, 20 years after Marat Safin was the first one born in the 1980s and a year after Bianca Andreescu was the first woman born in the 2000s to do so
Non-champions entered the Champions League in 1997 for first time. Up to then, average was 5 new winners each decade. In 22 tournaments since, has been 1 new champion. The UCL is doing what it was intended to do. Until now?

As bad as that sounds, Labour won the following election with the same leader in place, so not all’s lost for Labour, right? Provided there’s a bout of total war in the meantime, which may not be that great for the rest of us ...
Yesterday, Bianca Andreescu was the first woman born in the noughties to win a Grand Slam singles title. Today, Daniil Medvedev could be the first man born in the nineties to do so
If Bianca Andreescu wins the @usopen tonight, a woman born in the noughties will have won a grand slam singles title before a man born in the nineties does, though it’s possible it might only be by a day
