@HJMKent@Angmiller99 Yorkshire 1950s we had Mischievous Night when we were legally allowed to dismantle nearby bonfires. But only by leaving our own unguarded, so we never did.

TIP: Gov warnings about being prepared got me thinking about some food stockpiling. Given maybe no ability to cook. I’ve just bought a load of tuna and butter beans (M&S 55p) and crackers and frozen some cheddar. Most Cheese is great frozen. It’ll defrost when needed. Any tips?
@thinkingwest We learned in school that Christopher Columbus didn’t know where he was going when he set off, didn’t know where he was when he got there and didn’t know where he’d been when he got home.
The death penalty is inadmissible because it is an attack on the inviolability and dignity of the person. The common good can be safeguarded and the requirements of justice can be met without recourse to capital punishment: effective systems of detention have been developed that protect citizens while at the same time do not completely deprive those who are guilty of the possibility of redemption. #NoDeathPenalty
When the German generals were taken to Trent Park in north London their driver was a young British ATS woman, known only as "Carmichael".
She must be someone's relative... I have no photo of her, but would love to trace who she was.
Please do get in touch if you are her relative.
Unpopular opinion: there should be no enthusiasm from the EU about the UK rejoining.
That the Brits realise that leaving was a dumb idea (who could have guessed, except everyone) is one thing. But letting them rejoin just because of that would be an equally dumb idea from the EU.
If the UK wants to rejoin, it needs first to fully get on with the program: no more wincing at the political project, no more rebate, etc. If not, it's better to leave them outside, close to us but in no position to undermine us.
Otherwise we would get back to square in one generation, with a new wave of UK exceptionalism that would make Eurobashing the favourite political sport across the Channel and open the way for a Brexit 2.0.
In general, Europe should resist the political urge to speedrun painting the entire map blue and gold just for the sake of it. Yes, we want Europe united, but it will only make us weaker if those we let in don't actually share the political vision and only see us as a money bag/market.
@bmay Lady behind me at the theatre apologised at the end of the play for spoiling the most tension-filled few minutes (Dial M for Murder) by claiming to have had her hand stuck in a cellophane bag of sweets. I gave her my best hard stare.
@nicksaraev Isn’t this the logical conclusion from multitracking/sampling etc.? The only “real” music is that which you hear, in real time, from a person scraping, hitting or plucking an instrument in front of you without electricity. Everything else is a simulacrum.
@BigC1874@rosemeyer1939 So you got inside a deadly two-ton metal vehicle of a type you'd never used before and just assumed you knew how it worked. Also it's "brake".
