It's got a steep learning curve in some respects, but it's worth putting the time in if you enjoy running a kingdom along with your dungeon delving. I do suggest reading up a little on Birthright first, though.

Healing to full HP without the use of magic takes days (or up to 4 weeks in some cases); training to level up can take just as long, and not all PCs necessarily level at the same time. Then there is magic item or castle creation...

No mention of ability score checks are made at all in the 1e PHB or DMG, and in 2e they're presented as alternative saving throw methods. Plenty of adventures and DM house rules used them, however.
