What encouraged me was the report from Jonathan Sams, chairman of the SBC Credentials Committee.
In the past 7 years they investigated over 800 churches submitted to them.
Over 600 of those (or 75% of their work) involved allegations of sexual abuse and how the local church responded to them.
This committee received 58 reports of churches having female pastors, and only 44 of those reported were actually SBC churches.
So, the majority of what the SBC does doesn't match the headlines.
Our structure does far more to hold churches accountable in the area of sexual abuse than women in ministry roles, but you know how journalists are. It's gotta "sizzle" to get the clicks.
To be completely fair, it is going a little farther.
Some argue that preaching on a Sunday morning is not something reserved exclusively for the Ordained
Or, that women teaching men, provided they do so under the oversight of the Pastor/Elder/Overseer is acceptable.
Even from the wording of this amendment, contrary to it's intent, is interpreted that way.
This week at the SBC, Ozark Mayor and long-time Registration Secretary Don Currence encouraged Southern Baptists to consider serving in public office
“I never in my life thought I would be doing public service, but God opened the door. I realize now we need Christians to be serving in public service…
"It's not easy, but the thing is, we need Christians to take the lead in our government, in our city, and be involved.”
We follow Robert's Rules:
A motion to "call the question" is made.
The chair is not allowed to ignore it.
The motion to "call..." must be seconded.
Once it is, it is not debatable (the chair can’t discuss whether to stop discussing).
The chair immediately puts that motion to "call" to a vote.
If it is adopted by a 2/3 vote: Debate ends immediately.
The chair then must proceed directly to a vote on the pending motion.
This means at least 2/3 of the people in the room who were paying attention were ready to vote.
Endless debate is pointless, unless you just like to hear people disagree. That only increases division.
Robert's Rules is about making a decision and then moving on in unity. It ensures the minority is heard, but keeps them from endlessly speaking just to provide them a platform to complain, which only serves to increase disunity.
That's why when 2/3 have made up their minds, there's no point in continuing a divisive debate.
I can recommend some great books on parliamentary procedure by @barrymccarty
@JoeBirdsall@BaptistPress Closed = only members of your local church
Open = anyone
Close = only baptized members of a church of like faith i.e. "the church" not "your church"

They went out from us, but they did not belong to us; for if they had belonged to us, they would have remained with us. However, they went out so that it might be made clear that none of them belongs to us.

@TylerLeeConway He is getting rolled for this, but I think what he means, and I could be wrong, is that most members will never meet with their pastor. Not because their pastor is unwilling, but most members just won’t.
@BradyShearer The struggle is real. Every time we have a special event where, for example, we have one service together, instead of our normal three, we always have people show up at the early service time and say “I didn’t know”
