Due mainly to the cultural cachet of science, modern meditation teachers of all traditions, secular and religious, have marketed what they teach as a sort of 'science of the mind'.
To my eyes, this is mostly misleading as regards actual practice. Meditation is much more akin to athletic disciplines and performance arts, in my experience.
The embodied skills and qualities of attention I needed to develop attempting to excel in music and gymnastics in early adolescence were of far more relevance and benefit to contemplative training than anything else I've learned.
The age of dogma has ended. We may stand on the shoulders of giants who inspire us but then we must grow up. Abandon the stale parroting of old ideas and concepts. Observe without agenda. Everything else is dogma.
