Check out our new paper! We used 3 drones to estimate the height of nearly 200 conifer seedlings growing in linear disturbances in Alberta’s boreal forest. Each seedling had up to 15 estimates from different datasets and methods. Context + Q&A below (1/8) https://t.co/ke6fycJRz3
In our NEW PAPER we found that high-resolution #UAV orthomosaics and #NeuralNetworks provide an accurate and efficient solution for finding tree seedlings 🌲🌲
How well did our #AI perform at accurately & quickly identifying 30,000 newly planted seedlings?
Check out our new paper in ISPRS R&S which describes the results & see it in action here!

*2 weeks to stop the criminalisation of trespass*
Ramblers, wild campers, Travellers & protestors aren't criminals - but soon, they could be.
Sign our petition to stop the govt criminalising trespass- 58,000 have signed; we need 100k for MPs to debate it https://t.co/GznNYXDwmf
The UK's National Forest Inventory is a monitoring programme of our woodlands & plantations.
@Forest_Research have a public consultation on how the NFI can be improved.
Make sure you have your say 🌳🌲🌳🌲

How can auxiliary data from unmanned aerial vehicles and airborne laser scanning data help increase the precision of forest inventories? A recent study on small forest properties showed remarkable results; read the paper here: https://t.co/yJcWZ5LNi7
If you're based in Wales, there are three PhD Scholarships available working with us and @BangorUni. The first is "Adaptive strategies for the management of invertebrate pests in Wales": https://t.co/R2lOcthAWL Closing date 30th Jan 2020. 1/3
Great to see this paper finally published. In NZ around 30% of #forest plantations are small-woodlots on farms. We researched methods to precisely measure this important resource with #UAV data. @ForestCallNZ @scion_research@Forestry_OUP
Dash et al. provide a summary of the current state of #Drone research into invasive alien plants.

Impressive to see the #NeuralNetwork performing accurately at this site despite the weeds in places. These methods are the future for high-resolution #UAV remote sensing for many tasks. Great work!
This footage shows our results from trials applying deep learning algorithms to UAV data. It shows 98.5% detection accuracy, identifying young pine seedlings ‘ortho’ (looking down). The team decided to test the same approach on footage from a #UAV with an oblique camera.
This was great work by our former intern Rebecca who monitored the physiological response to herbicide in invasive trees using #remotesensing. This research is important to help improve the #sustainability of the #forest sector in #NewZealand.
Thanks to #remotesensing technology we can tell if a tree is being affected by herbicide, by looking at the photosynthesis responses to herbicides via hyperspectral data. Will be very useful for #wilding control
