@gregmepstein Times and spaces without portable tech are fine, esp. for kids. Eliminating portable tech is another, and would not make life better overall. I'd put up with a lot of needless distraction to be able to call 911 after a car wreck, or even to take a time-sensitive gig.
@gregmepstein The point I was attempting to make: modernity is an unnecessary distraction when all is well. Who needs medicine, heat, A/C, or comm tech when you're healthy, warm, content? You need modernity when you're sick, or cold, or hot, need to reach or be reached, etc.

@jamestanton Then fraction stuff falls out of algebra properties. Common denominators: a/c+b/c = a(1/c)+b(1/c)=(a+b)(1/c)=(a+b)/c. Multiplying: (a/b)*(c/d)=(a*(1/b))(c*(1/d))=(ac)((1/b)(1/d))=(ac)(1/(bd))=(ac)/(bd). (2nd to last equality left as an exercise.)
@jamestanton Then 4/5 is defined as 4*(1/5), meaning "four of those fifths"). Numerator (sounds like numberator) is "how many" and denominator (sounds like denomination) is like "how many what". Then 4÷5 is just defined to be 4*(1/5)...
