“Nikita” is from Elton John’s 1985 album Ice on Fire. Written by Elton John and Bernie Taupin, the synth-pop ballad became one of his biggest hits of the 1980s, peaking at #3 on the UK Singles Chart and #7 on the Billboard Hot 100, while reaching #1 in Germany and Switzerland.

The song features backing vocals from George Michael, who was at the peak of his Wham! fame, adding another layer to its lush production. Although “Nikita” is traditionally a male name in Russian, Elton was aware of this when the song was written and the character was nevertheless portrayed as a female East German border guard. The iconic music video, directed by Ken Russell, starred Anya Major, the same actress and athlete who famously threw the hammer in Apple’s legendary “1984” commercial.

“Missing You” is from John Waite’s 1984 album No Brakes. The power pop-rock track became a massive solo hit for the former Babys frontman, reaching #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, #9 on the UK Singles Chart and the Top 10 in several other countries. Decades later, it found a new generation of fans after being featured on the Emotion 98.3 radio station in Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, becoming one of the game's most memorable licensed songs and further cementing its place in pop culture.

Tina Turner recorded a soulful cover of the song in 1986, and Alison Krauss released a highly successful version in 2006, filming a music video that closely paid homage to Waite's original. Waite's knack for hit songs continued later when he fronted Bad English, scoring another #1 hit in 1989 with "When I See You Smile."
