From Aristotle's to the JAM

All eyes are on the #graypaper and the new @Polkadot candidate design, released by @gavofyork at #token2049dubai, among enthusiasts and wary alike.

Now I bring you on a metaphysical journey which has lasted for more than 2k years. 📖

It was in fact Aristotle, philosopher and founder of Aristotelian Metaphysics, who postulated the concept of becoming from "potential being" to "actual being" around 370 BC.

Becoming, therefore, according to Aristotle, is the process that pushes all things that could potentially have a certain form to assume it, to put it into action. A concatenation of movables and engines which, however, for the philosopher, cannot be infinite.

Aristotle finds the need to identify a prime mover which is not moved by anything else: an unmoved mover.

The movement is eternal, that is, it has never had an origin and will never have an end. For this reason he also defines the immobile mover as a pure act, devoid of motion and power.

Over the centuries the concept has resurfaced and has been reworked several times by other philosophers, artists and scientists.

Saint Thomas Aquinas, for example, around 1200 AC, aligned the concept with Christian theology and faith, God as an unmoved mover.

Dante Alighieri around 1500 AC was inspired by the concept of the immobile mover in his famous verse “Love that moves the sun and the other stars".
(And if Polkadot is the sun and the parachains are its planets, with the JAM chain then we go from a Solar system to a Galactic one).

Today, more than 2000 years later, the concept of the unmoved mover remains more or less unconsciously in the human mind.
It pervades us and pushes us to create art, science, technology, which lasts over time and remains as our legacy for generations to come.

When I delved into the design of the JAM chain, the first simile that came to mind is Ptolemy's "universal machine".
The armillary sphere, the Aristotelian conception of the universe reworked by Ptolemy, in his geocentric vision, with the terrestrial globe at the center of everything.

It describes the design of the JAM chain perfectly.

Instead of Earth, at the center we have DOT as a functional token for the use of services, blockspace and shared security.
Polkadot 2.0 is one of the interconnected services, the larger, finer rings represent other services, which communicate with each other and with Polkadot.
The outermost and largest links that encapsulate everything, is the JAM chain.

A shared state by all services and acted upon by all cores.
Delegating code execution to the cores and thus allowing a deployment of any form and type of code, #permissionless.

The design of the JAM chain reflects the concept of a global computer, an artificial Gaia. A computation engine open to all, unstoppable and scalable for massive global use.

What @Ethereum essentially wanted to be, 10 years ago with the #yellowpaper.

But we need to go beyond the mere paradigm of #deFi and fast low-cost transactions.
Shifting the focus on services and therefore on applications, guaranteeing everyone shared security, as well as accessible, computational power, the possible applications are huge.

As Asimov narrated of our civilization 200,000 years ahead of us, which however with the passing of the eras had forgotten its origin, the Earth.

So maybe in 200,000 years mankind will wonder and philosophize about who ever conceived and started the JAM chain, which has existed since time immemorial as an Unmoved mover, ranging between N thousand solar systems.

Actually no, it will itself remind us of everything.
This is the FOUNDATION.
