In a brazen endorsement of perhaps the United States’ most imperialist endeavour in recent history, The Economist promotes the absurd idea that the US is restoring democracy in Venezuela.

The problem is that Venezuela’s democratically elected leader, Nicolas Maduro, is currently held captive in a US prison as a result of the United States’ brutal kidnapping operation on January 3rd of this year.

Since then, the United States has made no effort to conceal its neo-colonial ambitions for Venezuela: restructuring Venezuela’s oil capacities to serve Washington, pressuring acting President Delcy Rodriguez to normalise relationships with Israel - something President Maduro, a longstanding supporter of Palestine, would never do, and releasing reactionary coup-plotters from Venezuelan prisons. 

The increasingly obvious control of Venezuela by Washington is further cemented by its response to Venezuela's horrific dual earthquakes in June- Washington immediately moved to bring in more military personnel, in what is being framed as “disaster relief.” 

Many have compared this “assistance” to the same disaster relief deployed to Haiti by the US after the former suffered a major earthquake in 2010. What followed was an occupation of the country disguised as humanitarian relief. 

In 1915, Soviet revolutionary Vladimir Lenin famously dismissed The Economist as "a journal that speaks for British millionaires." 111 years later, all that’s changed is that it now also speaks for American billionaires.
