@steve_mcdee @NeilJamesFoster @HighCourtTrivia There is a note in Menzies J's biography in the Oxford Companion to the High Court that His Honour experienced "a severe cardiac illness within one year of his appointment [in 1958]" and suggests that might have impacted his early years on the Court; so illness seems plausible?
