as a caregiver i work very hard to respectfully correct and remind my grandmother that aging is not the end of the world. it can be really hard to witness a loved one saying mean things about themselves. i plan to continue to show my gma luv&support #AdvocacyInAging24
@annasanadvocate it just shows that some of our beliefs, morals, and values do not change as we age. reproductive rights affect all genders and ages #AdvocacyInAging24
@dijadontneedya this is an example of ageism bc it seems that people associate a checkbook as a “retired” source of payment that only older adults use. a cheque spends the same as a debit card! #AdvocacyInAging24
@annasanadvocate thanks for sharing that experience! its hard to be sure of people's intentions and thoughts behind their words. I know I have seen young girls who look older. what do you think he meant by the statement? #AdvocacyInAging24
@activeagingdoc great post and additional thoughts sarah. i think that it’s important to self reflect from time to time. bc yes like sarah said, not all ageist acts are committed maliciously. maybe education&promoting self awareness can combat this #AdvocacyInAging24
compassionate ageism is the belief that all or most older adults are vulnerable and deserve/need special policies & treatment just because they’re old. it also reminds me of the concept in sw as a “white savior”. #AdvocacyInAging24
@mmicha1713 yes just like my classmates said, the post was just good without the “for her age” statement. it seems like the main idea was that she has a solid workout routine. this video serves as a reminder that we can be healthy all throughout the life course #AdvocacyInAging24
i learned this week that phrases like “ x years young” & “young at heart” are problematic phrases in regards to combatting ageism. these imply there is shame associated w their age. #AdvocacyInAging24
@DerekIsNormal i’m wondering if maybe you feel this way because you haven’t seen an older adult have a child. or that this goes against our “societal norm” #AdvocacyInAging24
the students I talked with this week say that they are afraid of dying and lack of quality of life. people don’t want to be in pain physically. and they all just want to survive and be truly happy. you can be happy and healthy AND older!!! #AdvocacyInAging24
This is a wonderful resource that talks about nutrition, physical and mental exercises, and overall wellness tips for women who are aging #AdvocacyInAging24

@annasanadvocate I agree that anti-aging begins with education and advocacy. I can’t wait to hear about some things you talked about in the interviews. #AdvocacyInAging24
@PReetzke Yes Paul! I agree! Social workers are very fond of a person-centered approach. I think that it is important to consider the diagnosis and how it affects the person; additionally, the person and how they are managing should be of priority #AdvocacyInAging24
@_aging_tg I admire your perception of aging. Additionally, I think it is important to allow opportunities for them to vocalize their stories with someone who is genuinely interested in the adult's experiences. #AdvocacyInAging24
March is National Nutrition Month! Meals on Wheels serves meals homebound older adults at risk of malnutrition. In honor of "March for Meals" I encourage you to reach out to local programs to see if they need additional help this month! #AdvocacyInAging24#SaveLunch
@sarah_e_tesar I like your posts this week Sarah! I have been looking into policy and programs that fund Meals on Wheels while at my internship. I can actively support policy campaigns by reaching out to local commissioners &explain why services are imperative to the community #AdcoacyInAging24
@sarah_e_tesar Great question Sarah. I have already been trying to achieve financial literacy. I know that as a single woman I need to make sure that I have a retirement savings fund. I also compare and contrast insurance policies for my grandparents Medicare. #AdvocacyInAging24
Our society could benefit from more gerontological research. Researchers could gather diverse info about older adults by reaching out to places where they often congregate like religious institutions, daycare centers, and community centers #AdvocacyInAging24
@MartiWebb61@TheDementiaGuru@annasanadvocate Thx for pointing this out Marti! Do you think cultural and geographical factors could contribute to this type of language? do you think this would make it ok? Im from rural Appalachian Mtns, and I've noticed Southerners use this language often and mean no harm #AdvocacyInAging
