They called him the Spearhead of the Spearhead Division, because his tank was almost always the very first one into the fight.
He led 21 assaults from the front, charged German Panthers head-on, and had three Shermans destroyed under him.
Brad Pitt's "Wardaddy" in the movie Fury was widely inspired by him.

“I would burn every ledger in the Western Hemisphere, every number in every phone, every name in every little black book, for one more morning of hearing her say my name as if she meant it.”
If you do not understand that, ask @MCCCANM.
This is what matters. The modern world wants to bleed the fight out of men. It wants soft men, tame men, men who ask permission when they should stand watch. That is why so much of its advice is rotten.
Picture it. You are away on business. She calls. A man has been stalking her. He picked the lock. He left a note. He says he will be back tomorrow night.
What do you do?
Do you tell her to call a locksmith? Do you tell her to call the police? Or do you come home at once?
And what if you cannot come home?
What if you are at sea, or overseas, or too far away to get there in time? Does your brother go? Did your father teach him, too, that there are times a man must plant his feet and hold the line?
Do you know how to look a man in the eye and let him see, all at once, that he has made a grave mistake? Not a mean look. Not swagger. Not theater. Plenty of broken men know how to menace. That is not the point.
The point is protection. The point is not staring the man down but looking straight into his soul to stare down the demon inside.
Your job is to guard what is alive and good in this world. Your people. Your home. The laughter in your kitchen. The peace in your bed. The hope in your children. The future you are building together.
And to the strong men, the men who know how to fight, the men who have seen war, or storms at sea, or the hard face of evil in a remote corner of the world: what are you protecting?
Your pride? Your property? Your reputation? Your marriage?
Then you are already off course.
What you were built to protect is love.
You do not betray it, because betrayal poisons it. You do not ignore danger when it circles your wife, because lust and malice are the enemies of love. You protect your home not because it is brick and wood, but because love lives there. Joy lives there. Hope lives there.
This matters more than most men know.
The percentage of men who will fly home immediately and risk a deal are small but the percentage who will do it filled with joy are tiny.
She doesn’t want you to come home storming mad, ready to break necks. She wants you to come home and trying her sourdough, play monopoly with the kids and smile with the so if that stalker comes back he will run in misery knowing that house is protected with love.
Yes the shotgun is loaded, yes your antenna are up but you did not come home to scare the kiddos or end up in jail.
She does not want a man forever snarling at shadows. She does not want a fool aching for the next fight. She wants a man strong enough to make a place where joy can live without fear. A man calm enough to laugh, steady enough to rest, and hard enough, when the hour comes, to stand between what he loves and what would destroy it.
That is the balance. Not rage. Not posturing. Not bloodlust.
Love in one hand. Readiness in the other.

This dog's name was Gunner. My uncle brought him back from WW2. He was raised and slept under my uncle's anti- aircraft gun. The gun crew shared their
rations to feed him. By the time he was 18 months old, my uncle said he would stand up and look at the sky. If he laid back down they knew all was ok. If he growled
and put his hackles up they got at the ready. He knew the sound of the German aircraft and my uncle said he
never got it wrong. He said Gunner was better than any early warning system. I'm probably the only one left in the family that knows that story now, so I thought I'd tell it before it's lost forever, like many stories must be from that time. Thanks for reading it.
A year ago today I tore my acl, I felt like my life was crumbling down. I was playing my best football of my NFL career & I was just wondering why God would do this to me. A year later, same position playing good football when it matters most & otw to the Super Bowl !!
I NEVER do this but could I please get either a retweet or a like for those as psyched as I am that we are not only going to win but send a signal that these assholes who are trying to destroy our country have awakened a sleeping, glorious giant. I love you fellow patriots.
