Thanks @MikeTierneyIR for the shout out. Excited about this paper. Lots of great recent work showing aid flows disproportionately to less poor and more politically connected parts of countries (@ryancbriggs, @ryan_jablonski, @kotsadam, among others). Our contributions in 🧵 1/6
Seeking asylum is 100% a legal form of entry. #EndTitle42 now.
Can I count on you, @RobWittman, to protect people seeking safety at our border by rejecting any bill that would extend #Title42? via @RAICESTEXAS

If someone is incarcerated because of something they illegally used but is now completely legal - they should not be incarcerated one single second more. @CoynerHD62 @ssurovell did their best to fix this. Now hundreds of Virginians have to wait another year for solutions. Shame!
The VA Senate will decide soon on funding a pilot program that would ensure everyone who wants a lawyer has access to one at their first appearance before a judge! Learn more in the video below.

ACTION NEEDED: Tell the Senate Finance committee to fund a pilot to support counsel at first appearance in Virginia. People's freedom and the outcome of their cases depend on it! https://t.co/JLmXONMAR3
HB 1272 was up today and removes the ability for localities to require masks in schools.
Before we remove masks, we need to follow the science to protect all students, and employ all tools to keep children safe including those who can't be vaccinated or the immunocompromised.
Currently, some Virginia jurisdictions ensure counsel at first appearance, but many do not. I presented SB 475 to the @VASenate Judiciary Criminal Subcommittee to require that in all criminal cases, defendants would be given an attorney during their 1st appearance before a judge.
No. We don't need to end $300 a week in emergency unemployment benefits that workers desperately need. We need to end starvation wages in America. If $300 a week is preventing employers from hiring low-wage workers there's a simple solution: Raise your wages. Pay decent benefits.
When I was fighting in the House of Delegates to reform qualified immunity so that we can hold police accountable, Mark Herring stayed silent. It’s a pattern with him. He only does the right thing when he's pushed.
Here’s the data on Minneapolis police use of force per week since 2017. It looks like they reduced use of force for a few weeks after killing George Floyd and then *increased* police violence substantially. The systemic problem remains. https://t.co/TVeEIOFoo1
Let us use this verdict as a call to continue to fight for justice. This is not the time to rest, but to see the verdict as a sliver of light shining through cracks in the system of white supremacy that must be torn down.
Last year @JusticeFwdVa prioritized eliminating pretexts for police stops & succeeded—bills carried by @HopeforVirginia@SenLouiseLucas were enacted 3/1. Don’t fall for glossed over “police reforms” we know don’t work. Reformers nationwide reach out, we’re here to help.
