So many problems with this.

First, she’s arguing with a true statement. No party will save us. This is a fact. Full stop.

Second, she’s pretending that most policy issues are easily divided into “moral” and “immoral” positions. The reality is that most policy issues are not so clear. The Bible doesn’t offer a clear moral code for immigration, taxation, international policy for modern nation states. Wisdom, yes. Codes, no.

Third, she’s thus asking pastors to bind consciences on areas of discernment over which people can have good faith disagreements. This is legalism. It is the opposite of the gospel.

Fourth, pastors are pastors. They aren’t experts in foreign policy, tax policy or immigration policy. Perhaps we should applaud their humility for not pretending to be masters of the universe?

Fifth, this is yet another example of an online, national influencer disrupting trust in local institutions. This is not good for the bride of Christ, and it doesn’t honor the bride’s groom.

Sixth, I’m guessing that most churches she’s attacking *are* clear about the ethical issues that divide into clear moral categories: abortion, LGBTQ issues, racism, and rule of law. But there is room for disagreement even in these issues wrt policy! For example, we must agree that abortion is a sin. But that doesn’t mean we must agree, prudentially, about how to decrease abortions.

For example, I refuse to vote for a candidate who removed the pro-life position from his party’s platform and under whose leadership abortions increased. Allie Beth would vote for him. I think we can disagree on this in good conscience.

And, as it turns out, that IS courageous, moral clarity. ☝🏻
