Singapura tengah mengalami gelombang PHK besar sepanjang 2025. Data Kementerian Perdagangan dan Industri (MTI) menunjukkan 19.800 pekerja terkena PHK dalam sembilan bulan, terutama dari tujuh sektor utama.ย
Industri paling terdampak adalah properti (4.400 PHK) dan informasi & komunikasi (4.100 PHK), disusul professional services, retail trade, wholesale trade, education, dan food & beverage. Fenomena ini mencolok karena banyak terjadi di sektor-sektor dengan pekerja lokal dan ekspatriat berpenghasilan tinggi.
Sebaliknya, sektor dengan pertumbuhan tenaga kerja justru berada di level gaji rendah, seperti konstruksi dan pekerja migran domestik. Meskipun pemerintah mengklaim kebutuhan tenaga TI meningkat, praktiknya sektor informasi & komunikasi menyusut signifikan, termasuk kehilangan hampir 10.000 pekerja TI dalam dua tahun terakhir.ย
Banyak dari mereka memang telah berpindah ke industri lain yang masih memerlukan keahlian TI, namun angka penurunan tenaga kerja tetap menandai tekanan di sektor bernilai tinggi.
Meski terjadi PHK besar di beberapa industri, tingkat pengangguran Singapura tetap rendah dan stabil, yakni 2 persen secara keseluruhan dan di bawah 3 persen untuk penduduk lokal. MTI juga mencatat hampir 30.000 lowongan baru pada kuartal III 2025, sehingga total peluang kerja mendekati 50.000 sepanjang tahun, meskipun sebagian besar diisi oleh non-penduduk.

This massive book is incredible, with its comprehensive coverage of numerous fields of mathematics and their intersection with the world of AI, data science, and machine learning (AI+DSML). I remember the very first time that I encountered machine learning. This was 20+ years ago, and that was already after 20+ years of being drenched in advanced mathematics as an astrophysicist.
That first encounter of mine with ML was this definition: "Machine learning is the set of mathematical algorithms that learn from experience" (slightly paraphrased from the original quote by Tom Mitchell, CMU). That definition surprised me, confused me, motivated me, and changed the course of my career from astrophysics into AI+DSML.
This book by Tivadar Danka captures the full meaning of that definition. The book covers thoroughly the many areas and domains of mathematics through which patterns in data are detected, described, learned, and recognized - all for the benefit of powering ML and AI algorithms, applications, and aspirations.
This book will motivate you, surprise you, and inspire you in many ways, no matter what level of mathematics has (or has not) already propelled your career journey. There is room for all of us to grow.
