The Northern Hawk Owl is one of the most iconic species in the boreal forest and is also one of the least known. Check out our recent paper, coauthored by @juliaeput and @JuliaShonfield, that sheds some light on their post-fire habitat use in western N.A.

@FisherSpeaks @zonotrick@BirdsCanada Our average CONI per stop was 2.8 last night and 1.75 the night before. Last year we had similar numbers. It's such a high activity area for them! On our drive home we had close encounters with 3 CONI roosting on the road - luckily no CONI were harmed.
Taking advantage of some good weather evenings for the @BirdsCanada Canadian Nightjar Survey. Last night we had 28 Nighthawks and 1 Poorwill in Grasslands National Park. With so many Nighthawks, keeping track of each individual is quite a challenge!

@Edrmorris It's rough. I've gone from contract to contract. Since finishing my MSc in 2018, the longest contract I've gotten is 10 months. No breaks in employment, but it makes it tough to make life choices.
@ClaytonTLamb A strange twist to this issue is that most hopper cars are owned by the federal government. The feds are in charge of refurbishing and retiring old cars. Railway companies can do other things to protect wildlife, like slower speeds in areas with high wildlife-collison rates.

Very happy to have this paper published. Although barn swallows have experienced severe long-term declines in Canada, current short-term trends are fairly neutral. We also did not find a relationship between local breeding performance data and regional population trend data.

WATCH THESE BISON SWIM THE YELLOWSTONE RIVER ๐ This herd of bison decided to take a cold swim this spring (notice the melting snow โ๏ธ on the riverbank). It's hard to believe these large creatures can swim but as you can see from the video they do just fine!๐ธ Allison Skidmore
