In 1985 public attitudes toward smoking, drinking, and child safety were very different from today. Although cigarette health warnings had been on packs in the United States since 1966, smoking rates remained high, about 30% of American adults still smoked in the mid-1980s. It was also common to see smoking at concerts, sporting events, restaurants, and other public gatherings.

The Chicago Blues Festival began in 1984 and quickly became one of the largest free blues festivals in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees each year. The event helped revive interest in blues legends such as Muddy Waters, Howlin' Wolf, and Buddy Guy, while cementing Chicago's reputation as the capital of electric blues.

The photograph captures a moment that feels distinctly from another era, not because of the music, but because of changing social norms around parenting, smoking, and public health.

In 1985, only about 14% of U.S. states required child passengers to use car seats or restraints beyond infancy; today, all 50 states have child passenger safety laws.
