South Korean Teachers Caught Teaching Pro-North Korean, Anti-American Propaganda

South Korea's KTU (Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union) has faced repeated accusations of pro-North Korean activities, with some of its members convicted of violating the National Security Act.

A few years ago, students have secretly recorded teachers praising Kim Il-sung and portraying North Korea as a better place to live than South Korea. In the recordings, teachers blamed Syngman Rhee, the founding father of the Republic of Korea, for the division of Korea, while calling Kim Il-sung a "national hero" and teaching students that "North Korea's people's democracy is a much better system to live under." One teacher reportedly told students, "Conservatives are the problem everywhere."

As South Korea's largest teachers' union, the KTU wields significant influence. Last year, left-wing lawmakers have even voiced support for expanding the union's political rights and allowing greater political activity by teachers.
