Freezing rents in New York City would be a catastrophic mistake.
It is a classic trade-off between short-term attractiveness at the cost of long-term damage.
Rather than using rent freezes to disincentivize new rental units from being built, we should create policies than encourage developers to create as much affordable housing as possible.
You can only solve the rent problem if you build more housing.
