THREAD: It is with sadness that I tell you about Preston Chaney, who died in the Houston jail of COVID. He was trapped there for 3.5 months because he couldn't pay $100 after being accused of stealing lawn equipment and frozen meat. His story is important. (1)
@aidapsibr @BennyGrin @PetrocciNick There are 209 million adults in the US, at 20 million a month, isn’t that ~10.5 months? Also, why wouldn’t you think the number per month would increase?
Thank you @SenSchumer for joining us today to talk about the path forward for aviation workers and our industry as we work to defeat COVID and extend a workers-first recovery—and for your fierce support of aviation workers from the start 1/9 #ExtendPSP

@KimAust54786568@Yamiche We know the protection the vaccine provides lasts as long as the human trials which started in 5/2020. We can extrapolate based on certain aspects of those early patients that at least a year’s protection is provided, but could be longer than 2 years. We’ll know more soon
I agree with Europe: Wearing medical-grade masks will be important to slow the spread of the B.1.1.7 strain. We have consistent evidence that single-layer cloth masks are not as effective as surgical masks, and N95 or KN95 masks are even better. https://t.co/LtwxVVdETz
Research shows health facilities with unions have had lower COVID-19 mortality rates, better access to PPE and stronger infection control measures. Some frustrated health care workers are forming new unions or thinking about organizing for the first time.

Never ever. #MLKDay2021
We should be doing a massive lockdown right now, and it's sort of bizarre how that policy option has fallen off the radar. Hundreds of thousands of lives could be saved!
If anyone in California wants to do a civtech project which matters:
1) Find which healthcare providers have inventory
2) Publish #1 constantly
There is no step 3, and a lot of room for different approaches on step 1.
@JimDMiller@DKarol@mattyglesias Didn’t Enron shut down and threaten to shut down electrical power? If they hadn’t lied about their financials, they could’ve continued this. It wasn’t the power shut downs that put them out of business.
A few short years ago, Capitol Police arrested Rev. Raphael Warnock for praying in the rotunda in protest of GOP efforts to repeal the Affordable Care Act https://t.co/bCEmBEws3k
the (justified) focus on police shootings can obscure the extent to which this abuse and bullying of the public is also a huge problem. ordinary citizens must behave as if they are trained in deescalation tactics while armed law enforcement wild out at the slightest resistance.
Which is all to say, parking requirements are arbitrary climate denialism and drive up the cost of housing while restricting opportunities for small business. Want to have an immediate impact on making cities more livable? Eliminate parking minimums. (16/16)
When I'm asked to give advice to students, the #1 piece of advice I give is this:
Just because a subject is hard for you (math/science/etc), that doesn't mean you're "not cut out for it." You don't have to be a natural at your chosen subject. It's okay if you have to work hard.
