I am at a loss for words.
How many more residents, physicians, humans need to take their own lives before people start to listen?
Dr. Nakita Mortimer, you deserved more.
There is no amount of self-care or wellness that can fix a broken system.
How many more residents have to suffer?
Dr Nakita Mortimer may you rest in power and finally find peace🕊️
The complete disregard, just the utter disrespect, that @MountSinaiNYC has for its workers would almost be shocking if you didn’t know them any better. See you tomorrow Sinai.

Good morning to the 1400 resident physicians & fellows who are voting for THEIR union with @CIRSEIU! They've already accomplished so much, and now they're poised to make history by opening the doors to what workers can achieve with Philly’s largest private employer. Solidarity ✊🏾
We're in the midst of a national movement where residents everywhere are demanding dignity, agency, & respect. We’re tired of the exploitation of medical residency.
Coast to coast, we're taking on rich & powerful institutions & we’re WINNING #UnionStrong

IT'S A LANDSLIDE!!
The residents and fellows of @GWtweets won our union 253-16. We came together to fight for a seat at the table so we can advocate for the wellness of both our patients and each other AND WE DID IT!
.@GWHospital residents in Washington, D.C. are in the middle of their union election vote, fighting for their voice and power to finally be able to meaningfully advocate for better working conditions and patient care and to redefine medicine itself.

the NYPD is on pace to blow past its allotted overtime budget for FY2023 by ~$366 million which is 16X what it would cost to keep public libraries open on the weekends. Keep in mind, $366 million isn’t their OT budget, it’s what the NYPD went OVER their allotted OT budget ($374M)
I think unless you have someone in your life with acute psychiatric needs or addiction issues (separately or co-occurring) you don’t really realize that there is almost zero real help for people in many places.
Residents all need to be unionized. I remember that exhausted, helpless feeling duringresidency (1999-2002, before workhour regulations). I am in a physician union now. I support residents unionizing 100%. “If you don’t have a seat at the table, then you are probably on the menu”
This! The average life expectancy of a Black man in Washington, DC is 67 years, the same year they will now have full retirement benefits. 😔

Doctors at a major US insurance company deny tens of thousands of claims a month without even looking at patients’ files.
“We literally click & submit,” a former Cigna doctor told @ProPublica & @Capitol_Forum. “It takes all of 10 seconds to do 50 at a time.”
The inside story 🧵
Why do US medical residents work up to 80 hr/week (sometimes more), are often paid minimum wage counting all the work, have extremely high rates of suicide, and work 6 days per week w/ 24+ hr shifts?
The answer lies with cocaine & Dr. William Halsted.
Thinking this shortage, if it persists long-term, won’t kill people at least indirectly is a careless assumption. Depression and anxiety are common adhd comorbidities, both of which can be greatly exacerbated when executive dysfunction returns, which can often lead to self-harm.
