@OldHollowTree@Serene_Sentinel They aren’t hairless, nor smooth. And yes, their diet for nectar makes them essential pollinators, just because its less efficient than a bee or a fly doesn’t take away their pollinating roles
@1980scolours@OldHollowTree Well many social wasps varies in behavior, yellowjackets don’t have an issue with anyone, they may perceive threats differently.
@Serene_Sentinel@OldHollowTree But don’t minimize wasps as being harmful to pollinators. The only time a wasp will actually be harmful is if the wasp is non-native or invasive to that area, biodiversity doesn’t stop at pollinators, pollinators are part of wildlife and nature just as much as their predators(2/2
@Serene_Sentinel@OldHollowTree To be an incidental pollinator you have to be visiting a flower without the diet of eating nectar or pollen, like a spider. Wasps are essential pollinators just as much as beetles, bees, flies, hummingbirds, moths, butterflies, etc. yes it isn’t as much as those. (1/2)
@scadsobees@OldHollowTree There was a research done on german yellowjackets preying on honeybees (they both co-evolved and have a predator and prey relationship) and bee predation from attacks on beehives are LOW, 80% of the time the wasp flees, the second most likely probability is the death of the wasp
@OldHollowTree Okay yellowjackets hardly pose a threat to beehives, they’re not bad for bees, and either way your shit honeybees aren’t protected from being preyed upon by predators, and the predators aren’t evil for preying upon them either.
@scadsobees@OldHollowTree If thats the case explain why i held a yellowjacket, didn’t get stung. And pisses off a foraging yellowjacket trying to grab meat and all she did was buzz (warning sign) and didn’t get stung?
